Chesa Veglia is Romansh for old house, but this time-honoured restaurant is actually much more than that. A historic farmhouse in the pulsing heart of St. Moritz, this beautiful building is as rich in atmosphere as it’s in history. It’s quite impossible to walk through its door without being instantly beguiled by its allure, be it the infectious laughter coming from the bar and the sound of bartenders mixing cocktails, the welcoming Alpine scents of ancient pine and the look and friendly feel of the wooden furnishings and vintage cutlery, or the sense of luxury permeating the air. The ingredients for a perfect night are all there, and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy.
In 1936, Chesa Veglia was transformed by Badrutt’s Palace Hotel into an avant-garde meeting place for budding epicureans, the forefathers of today’s foodies. Since then, its irresistible atmosphere has attracted locals as well as tourists, not to mention VIPs such as Elizabeth Taylor and her entourage. To this day, Chesa Veglia is popular with the young, hip jet-set crowd fond of holidaying in St. Moritz, not just because of its unique ambience, but also thanks to its excellent food.
When it comes to food, it’s hard, if not impossible, to beat the incredible variety offered at Chesa Veglia. The establishment boasts three different restaurants and two bars, all unique and resplendent in their own way, guaranteeing that everyone will find just what they’re looking for.
Take the Patrizier Stuben for instance, stunning and elegant with its rustic Engadin décor: prepare to enjoy revisiting regional favourites, concocted by a chef who ensures that the fresh local ingredients used fulfil their potential and more. Traditional dishes with an incredible new spin grace the menu, side by side with other favourites such as caviar, foie gras and vegetarian specialities.
The Pizzeria Heuboden, meanwhile, is all about Italian cuisine and, more specifically, pizza plays the starring role, as you might expect, prepared authentically in a wood-fired oven. If the idea of ordering pizza in the heart of the Alps doesn’t appeal to you, think again: here, you’ll bite into a crust that will definitely make a lasting impression. Most decadent of them all is the famous Dama Bianca, a white grande dame of a pizza, prepared with tasty taleggio, delicate buffalo mozzarella, pungent Parmesan and topped with generous shavings of truffle.
At Grill Chadafö, open only during the winter season, delicious grill specialities await: the roasted Bresse chicken with rosemary is the restaurant’s signature dish and leaves even the most exhausted epicure lost for words.
And while Chesa Veglia is famous chiefly for its food, there’s yet one more reason to pay it a visit. Before or after dining, two bars – the Bar Carigiet all year round and Polo Bar in the winter – invite guests to unwind, relax and enjoy an aperitif, a cocktail, a beer or a glass of wine.
