The white peaks of the Engadin mountains are a skier’s paradise, with stunning views, fun slopes and amazing spots where you can stop and savour the delicious local cuisine. Staying local at Corviglia
St. Moritz’s local mountain is the famous Corviglia, a ski area ideal for everyone, including families with children. Badrutt’s Palace Hotel offers a free transfer to the valley station, making the area even more appealing to guests. Well connected to St. Moritz-Dorf, Corviglia is easy to reach thanks to the Chantarella funicular and the Marguns lift. At the top of Piz Nair (3,057 metres or more than 10,000 feet above sea level), the panorama will take your breath away, and you won’t be able to resist snapping a couple of pictures before heading down the slopes. Try the World Cup downhill run if you dare, or if you want to test your jumping skills, have a blast on the fun slope. But Corviglia isn’t all about skiing: the area is wide open and sunny, perfect for working on a winter tan in the midst of a stunning Alpine panorama, not to mention its status as a mecca for those who enjoy fine dining as much as they love skiing. The area is home to 15 restaurants, a guarantee that everyone will find exactly what they are looking for! In the mood for dim sum? You can savour it up high on the peaks at Quattro Bar. Want to dine outside on a sun-kissed terrace? Then stop by the Alpinahütte. Gliding down the glacier at Diavolezza
Switzerland’s longest glacier run, the Diavolezza, is famous the world over for being one of the most amazing descents in the Alps. The peak is reached easily by cable car. The downward run takes about 45 minutes, through what can only be described as a winter wonderland, an absolute paradise for those who truly love skiing and immersing themselves in nature. Unlike most other glacier ski areas, Diavolezza is ungroomed, making it a real treat for those who want to spice up their day in the snow with a smattering of adventure.
Breathless views and thrilling runs at Piz Corvatsch
Ascending from Surlej to Piz Corvatsch in the big red cable car is a thrilling experience in itself, and arriving at the upper station, at 3303 metres, is simply exhilarating. The descent, too, is exciting, as is the snow park – perfect for trying out tricks and jumps in the snow. The Alpetta mountain hut is particularly charming for a drink or a delicious lunch in a traditional setting. The sunny terrace is packed in fine weather, so get there early, take a seat and watch as the meat is grilled on the barbecue and the polenta is stirred in the traditional copper pot.
Slow down with cross-country skiing
Downhill skiing not your thing? St. Moritz is also renowned for cross-country skiing, and rightly so; the wide Engadin valley is home to some of Switzerland’s best runs. Try the excitement of gliding over the frozen lakes of Sils and Silvaplana, or challenge yourself on the Alp Bondo high-altitude trail – a beautiful way to spend a few active hours.
